The Anvil
Also known as legs on shouldersshoulder holderdeep missionary
A deeper missionary variation: the receiving partner lies on their back and rests their legs up on the other partner's shoulders, tilting the hips for a steeper, deeper angle.
The gist
The Anvil takes the closeness of missionary and adds depth. By lifting the receiving partner's legs onto their partner's shoulders, the hips tilt up and the angle steepens — which many find more intense. Because it reaches deeper, it rewards a slow warm-up and constant check-ins: depth is very personal, and comfortable is the goal, not maximal. A pillow under the hips makes the tilt easier to hold.
Step by step
Start in missionary, receiving partner on their back.
The receiving partner raises their legs and rests the calves/ankles on the other partner's shoulders.
Slide a pillow under the hips if it helps hold the tilt comfortably.
Ease in slowly and check in — deeper angles need more communication, not less.
Tips
- Depth is personal: agree on a signal to back off, and start shallow.
- If the stretch is too much, drop the legs to the chest or straighten them — small changes, big comfort difference.
